Phytochrome and the inductive dark period in coleus.

چکیده
Coleus blumei x C. frederici plants, the same clone used at Princeton (3), were propagated by cuttings and grown in a growth chamber under continuous illumination by cool white fluorescent lamps and incandescent bulbs (about 1000 ft-c) at an air temperature of 25 + 1 C. The experimental plants were grown with their roots in 125-ml Erlenmeyer flasks filled with nutrient solution consisting of 1.2 g of Hyponex (Hydroponic Chemical Co., Copley, Ohio) per liter of distilled water. The flasks were refilled with distilled water twice a day at about 0830 EST (Eastern Standard Time) and 1530 EST.

The flowering response of coleus in relation to photoperiod and the circadian rhythm of leaf movement.
The flowering response of Coleus frederici and Coleus blumei x C. frederici is dependent on the photoperiod; both plants have a critical day length of about 12 hr. The inductive phase, defined as the period when light signals inhibit floral development, started 10 hr after the onset of darkness under 4 and 8-hr photoperiods, and 8 hr after the onset of darkness under a 12-hr photoperiod. Howeve...
متن کاملA Semidian Rhythm in the Flowering Response of Pharbitis nil to Far-Red Light: II. The Involvement of Phytochrome.
The semidian ( approximately 12 h) periodicity in the effect of far-red (FR) interruptions of the light period preceding inductive darkness on flowering in Pharbitis nil appears to be mediated by phytochrome: (a) promotion by interruptions 2 hours before inductive darkness (-2 hours) and inhibition at -8 hours are greater the higher the proportion of FR/R+FR during the interruption; (b) brief F...
متن کاملEffect of Far-Red Light and its Interaction with Red Light in the Photoperiodic Response of Pharbitis nil.
Red light given in the inductive dark period inhibits flowering in short day plants, and this effect may be reversed by far-red light given shortly after the red irradiation. The pigment system involved in these reactions is called phytochrome. In Pharbitis, however, the flower-inhibitory effect of red light is not reversed by succeeding irradiation with far-red (6, 7, 8, 13). The flowering res...
متن کاملAspects of clock resetting in flowering of xanthium.
Flowering is induced in Xanthium strumarium by a single dark period exceeding about 8.3 hours in length (the critical night). To study the mechanism which measures this dark period, plants were placed in growth chambers for about 2 days under constant light and temperature, given a phasing dark period terminated by an intervening light period (1 min to several hrs in duration), and finally a te...
متن کاملPhotocontrol of Dark Circadian Rhythms in Stomata of Phaseolus vulgaris L.
Stomatal diffusion resistance in primary leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. which had been grown in light:dark cycles followed a marked circadian rhythm when the plants were transferred to continuous darkness. Reentrainment of the rhythm required more than one inductive change in photoperiod. The phasing of the rhythm of dark stomatal opening was contolled primarily by the light-on (dawn) signal, ...
